CBD and cancer: the honest answer to the internet’s biggest claim

If you are reading this because cancer has touched your life, we are sorry, and we are going to be straight with you. CBD does not cure cancer. Anyone who says it does is either mistaken or selling something. What the research actually shows is more modest, more interesting and, in places, genuinely helpful.

Where the “CBD cures cancer” idea came from

In laboratory dishes and in some animal studies, cannabinoids including CBD have been shown to slow the growth of certain cancer cells, or cause them to die. That is real, and it is why scientists keep studying them. It is also true of hundreds of other substances, from green tea to household bleach, and almost none of them turn into cancer treatments. A petri dish is not a person. The leap from “kills cells in a lab” to “treats cancer in humans” is enormous, and CBD has not made it. Cancer Research UK, which has looked at this evidence closely, says the same.

What has been tested in people

Human trials so far have been small. The best known tested a cannabis mouth spray containing both THC and CBD alongside chemotherapy in a handful of people with an aggressive brain tumour, and the results were interesting enough to justify a larger trial that is now under way in the UK. That is exactly how good science should work: a promising signal, then a proper test. Until that test reports, nobody can say whether cannabinoids help treat any cancer, and no product on sale to the public should suggest they do.

Where cannabinoids genuinely help

Living with cancer is not only about the disease. It is about the sickness from chemotherapy, the lost appetite, the pain and the sleepless nights. This is where cannabis-based medicine has a proven place. Nabilone, a prescription medicine related to THC, is licensed in the UK for chemotherapy sickness when other anti-sickness drugs have not worked, and specialists can prescribe other cannabis-based medicines in certain cases. These are prescribed by oncologists and palliative care doctors, at proper doses, as part of a full treatment plan. They are not the same as CBD oil from a shop, but they are proof that this plant has something real to offer people going through cancer.

Why caution matters more here than anywhere

Two risks stand out. The first is interaction: CBD changes how the liver processes many drugs, and that includes several chemotherapy medicines, hormone treatments such as tamoxifen, and the medicines used for pain and sickness. Taking CBD without telling your team could make a treatment less effective or its side effects worse. The second risk is delay. Every oncologist has met a patient who put off treatment to try something “natural” they found online. Cancer does not wait, and the kindest thing we can say is: please do not let a supplement, ours or anyone else’s, come between you and the treatment your doctors recommend.

If you or someone you love has cancer

  • Ask your oncologist or specialist nurse before taking any CBD product, and tell them the exact product and amount. They will not judge you for asking, and they need to know.
  • If sickness, pain or sleep are the problem, say so. There are proven medicines for all of them, and cannabis-based options can be part of that conversation with the right specialist.
  • Be very wary of “cannabis oil cures”, high strength oils sold privately, or anyone claiming a secret the NHS will not tell you. These claims target frightened people, and they are illegal for a reason.
  • Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support both have clear, honest pages on cannabis, CBD and cancer. Macmillan’s support line on 0808 808 00 00 is free and there for practical and emotional help.

Where our CBD oil fits in

Our oils are wellness supplements, and they are not intended to treat cancer or its symptoms. We know some people going through treatment choose CBD as a small comfort in a difficult routine, and if your medical team is happy with that, we are glad to be a gentle part of your day. We would much rather you bought nothing from us than bought something believing it could do more than it can.

The bottom line

The science on cannabinoids and cancer is real, early and worth watching, and the proven benefits today are about comfort during treatment rather than the disease itself. Lean on your medical team, lean on the charities who do this every day, and be gentle with yourself. That is the honest version, and we think you deserve nothing less.
