Over the past year, I have had the privilege of meeting some truly inspiring individuals who rely on dialysis two or three times a week to stay alive. These encounters prompted me to reflect on something I had rarely thought about in over 50 years, my kidneys and the incredible job they do to keep me healthy. Like many people, I had taken these remarkable organs for granted, never pausing to appreciate their vital role until I saw first-hand how much we depend on them.
Our kidneys are extraordinary in both their efficiency and resilience. Most of us are born with two, yet the body can function remarkably well with just one, or even when both are working at reduced capacity. While this reserve capacity is fascinating, it can also lead to a sense of complacency. Unlike parts of our body that we actively care for, like our teeth or skin, kidneys are often ignored until they start to fail. But maintaining kidney health is just as crucial as looking after any other visible part of the body.
Through this short book, I hope you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for these vital organs and learn how to better care for them. Because if there’s one thing I have learned, it’s that your kidneys deserve just as much attention as any other aspect of your health.
